There were two sinners at dinner. The Pharisees were concerned with holiness - and to them that meant keeping the maximum possible distance from anything, or anyone, unclean. So the religious man who invited Jesus to dinner couldn't imagine a kind of holiness that reaches down into the gutter to pull sinners out.
